Deadline clarification

For the sake of clarity: the deadline for submitting stories and art portfolios is one minute past 11:59 PM on the evening of July 15, Pacific (California) time.

This is also the deadline for entering any of our three guessing games on the Facebook page!

Tempted to just put my feet up until it hits two hours, and then start panicking as I try to proofread and do final edits to what I’ve written so far. This is what a ticking countdown does to me.

So I just started. Is that bad?

I’m nearly done with my story, but one thing that’s concerning me is that the machine doesn’t make its appearance until the story is 75% over. The role the machine plays is important (and the death prediction title is key to the whole story), but I don’t know if having it be absent from so much of the telling goes against the spirit of the book. I hope not!

Nope, not at all. I’m still stuck at 1000 words and I started 2 days ago…so yes. Crunchtime.

WOOO! I just finished! I am waiting on some people to read it before I send it in. Good luck to everyone still pushing through!

Ten hours isn’t exactly “under the wire,” but it’s closer than I’d like to cut it!

Okay. Okay. Nine hours. Serious revision is done, but touch-ups are very much called for. Crap, and I need to re-translate a poem. Thank God for the Pacific time zone!

“Send your story to ‘submit at machineofdeath dot net’.”

Thanks for the clarification. I *hate* submitting so close to deadline, but my work schedule has conspired make these infinitesimal details like time zone matter a great deal to me!

Um… oops… my computer crashed just as I was trying to make a submission. So I submitted it again, and then got two confirmations. Which means I guess my first submission went through after all. (Which is slightly unfortunate, because I’d actually made a few minor edits before making the second submission.) So, uh, if you got two submissions from me with the same title, ignore the first one, I guess? (But if you got another submission with a different title, _don’t_ ignore that one, ’cause I may submit another story if I can get it done by the deadline.)

I had the same freakout about the e-mail address. 4 a.m. is not a good time for panic!

Aargh! I am an idiot! In addition to double-submitting my story, I just realized that I also suggested an alternate title that was already the title of a story from volume one! I am dumb!

So, new alternate title (in case the original proposed title is unacceptable): “LUNG CANCER” (Yeah, it’s not as catchy a title, but I’m hoping the original proposed title is acceptable.)

Sigh of relief. I just finished a last-minute edit and submitted my story right under the gun. Just found out about the contest about a week ago and amidst my hectic day job, a two-day visit from my sister and family drama from my father, I was just able finish mine and turn it in by writing like crazy all day long.

Looked at the timer and Europe’s “The Final Countdown” wen through my head.
