This Tuesday: MOD Book Club at Powell’s Books!

Flickr photo by James

This Tuesday, August 9, Powell’s Books (Cedar Hills Crossing location) will be featuring Machine of Death at their monthly Science Fiction Book Club!

There isn’t really a permalink to the event listing, but it’s mentioned on the monthly Powell’s calendar here, as well as the MOD listing in their catalog here.

I am left to assume it will be an incredible experience for body and soul?

If you attend, write us with a report of how it went!

Live performance of “MURDER AND SUICIDE, RESPECTIVELY” in San Francisco!

Machine of Death is proud to partner with The Un-Scripted Theater Company of San Francisco for a special, one-night-only live performance of Ryan North’s story “MURDER AND SUICIDE, RESPECTIVELY.”

The performance is part of a show at Un-Scripted called “Act One, Scene Two,” in which actors start with the first scene of an unfinished play — or in our case, they’ll perform Ryan’s piece — and then keep going, improvising the rest of the story to show what happens next. It’s gonna be super-fun, and if you’re in the Bay Area, we’d love to see you there!

The show will be this Saturday, July 9, at 8pm. Tickets are available here!

This is an Official MOD Event — David Malki ! will be in attendance in person, Ryan North will be there on Skype (if all goes well), and we’ll have books and death prediction cards, as well as our super-fancy embosser that proves you were there in person.

EXTRA SPECIAL BONUS: MoD authors Erin McKean (“NOT WAVING BUT DROWNING”) and Shaenon K. Garrity (“PRISON KNIFE FIGHT”) will be on hand to sign books!

(David will also be at the Renegade Craft Fair in San Francisco both Saturday and Sunday.)

Podcast version of this story!

And just to give you a taste — here’s MC Frontalot reading “MURDER AND SUICIDE, RESPECTIVELY” for our podcast. We recommend listening to this one with headphones on.

“MURDER AND SUICIDE, RESPECTIVELY,” by Ryan North. (8 min)
Read by MC Frontalot.

“You don’t see it? What if we could ship this box further away? What if Dr. Merry lived thousands of light-years away, and we could somehow get the box to him? If we set a time for him to do the killing, and for us to run the blood through the machine shortly afterward, then as soon as we read the machine’s prediction, we’ve sent information faster than the speed of light!”

Ryan North writes “Dinosaur Comics,” your new favourite comic ever in time, which you can read online at qwantz.com and also in books too. He also built Project Wonderful, a site that makes online advertising not suck, and ALSO makes it awesome. He is a tall drink of water who lives in Toronto with his wife Jenn.

MC Frontalot was born Maxwell Claudio Frontasako behind a Boise Walmart in 1973. The fronting has increased exponentially since. Sixteen years of rap stardom, fourteen world tours, and hundreds of platinum albums find MC Frontalot threatening retirement. His legion of fans will sob quietly to themselves.

In the book, “MURDER AND SUICIDE, RESPECTIVELY” is illustrated by Aaron Diaz.

MOD in Calgary this weekend!

We’ll be in Calgary this weekend at the Calgary Comics & Entertainment Expo! In attendance will be no less than:

Editors Ryan North & David Malki !
Artists Kate Beaton, Danielle Corsetto, Christopher Hastings, Cameron Stewart, & Kris Straub

On Sunday afternoon at 2 PM we’ll be playing a lively game of Machine of Death Draw & Guess with Kate, Chris, Kris & special guest Smilin’ Dave Kellett!

For some reason I want to assume the voice of the classic-car expo announcer from radio commercials and say “Bring the whole faaaamily for a greeeaat day!” I guess the reason is because…it’s true?

Come bring your books by to be signed, or join in the fun at the Draw & Guess! We can’t wait to meet you!

Video: MOD Draw & Guess at TCAF!

All photos by Eric Akaoka / More photos of the event here!

Thanks so much to everyone who came to see us in Toronto! We had a great time. We brought two cases of books, which we thought would be plenty, but they were gone by midmorning Sunday. It was also super neat to see you bring your copies from home to have signed! Hooray in every way!

We were also totally thrilled to see such a massive crowd at the Draw & Guess event. Folks were lined up both directions by the door, filling both walls of one hallway entirely and queuing out further onto the library floor. We’re so pleased you enjoyed the event — we heard nothing but nice things afterwards. Which is great, because we want to do it again! It’s proving to be a really fun game that we hope to keep staging at different events if we can. It’ll only get better as we work out the kinks!

Here is video, in case you weren’t at the show! It’s about 30 minutes long.

The camera unfortunately didn’t pick up the first three clues, which, for the record, were “DOLPHIN,” “BURIED BY NEWSPAPERS” and (pictured above) “INABILITY TO UNDERSTAND METAPHORS.”

Here’s another fun thing we had at the show:

Besides signing the books — which anyone can do — we thought it’d be neat to give folks some official evidence that they were there, some reward for taking the trouble to come out to the show. So we went a little EMBOSSER CRAZY.

We’ll have the Official MoD Seal Embosser at most places we travel, so if we’re coming to your town, please bring your copies of the book to come be Stamped and Sealed! It’s like a weights & measures inspection — it protects the book from being tampered with.

Next place we’ll have the stamp is Maker Faire in San Mateo this weekend, then World Steam Expo in Michigan, then Heroes Con in Charlotte, then Calgary Comics & Entertainment Expo in June!
